"The fingerprint scanner is a key feature of a smartphone, and if this changes, it could make it more difficult to get around the law," they wrote.

The government has been doing a lot of research on the issue. As they write in a "Theoretical" for the U.S. Department of Justice, a 2011 study, the fingerprint scanner is the "most reliable method of tracking fingerprints under the U.S. National Crime Victimization Survey."

"In fact, our study showed that the fingerprint scanner can track almost 1 in 3 fingerprints," concluded the study, entitled: "How to Reduce the Touch ID Problem in the U.S."

The U.S. government is now working on a fix for this problem, called the fingerprint "fingerprint capture," that can be used by fingerprint scanners as well as other types of smart devices. The government plans to unveil a new version of the fingerprint sensor on November 28, 2013.

A new sensor with an infrared sensor would also be a big step forward for the fingerprint sensor. "The fingerprint camera uses infrared light to record the presence of a fingerprint sensor at a sensor location in the hands of the user," stated the researchers.

When Apple introduced a fingerprint scanner in late 2009, it released a video explaining how it was used. "In the video, the Apple Watch and its embedded fingerprint camera are used to capture a fingerprint for use with the iPhone XS and the iPhone X. As the camera can record the fingerprint, it can also record the data from the other device and be able to be used to track the location of the location of the other device," stated the video.
