The number of cases in the city center is continuing
The number of cases in the city center is continuing to climb, although some residents still worry that they will die. According to the WHO, the number of cases may increase dramatically if there is a new outbreak or if there are more cases. "There is a risk that a new outbreak and transmission can result in more deaths, especially if there is a new outbreak and transmission occurs within a short time period," says Dr. Maryanne Dusken, the head of the WHO's Division of International Public Health.
Dr. Dusken told Reuters that the risk of a new Ebola outbreak is even higher if the community are not evacuated from the area. She said that the risk of that is increasing. "What most of us know is that there is a risk of a new outbreak, and that is if the community are not evacuated, that may actually occur. The risk of a new transmission, on top of the overall risk, is quite high," she says.
In the most recent update, the WHO describes the symptoms of Ebola as "a rapid onset of symptoms. The symptoms can be mild, mild and/or very serious . . . In some cases, the symptoms may be severe and can last for up to seven days."
The WHO says that the risk of a new outbreak and transmission is increasing and that there are currently at least 15 confirmed cases and 14 fatalities across the United States and Liberia. While the number of cases is not yet known, the number of confirmed cases in an area of more than 1,300 square miles was estimated to increase from 2,900 in August to 5,150 in April.
The outbreak in West Africa is also making headlines. The United Kingdom reported 2,400 cases of Ebola in the past week, a figure that is expected to rise to 3,400 by the end of the week. An additional 500 cases of the disease remain to be confirmed.
In the United States, the WHO reports that there are currently about 50 confirmed infections with the virus.
