But, at the same time, we need to look for
But, at the same time, we need to look for other impacts we think may be a little older than that. So, we began looking for other possible impact craters on the Moon. A large part of these places, including the lunar surface, are thought to be older than Earth itself, so we looked for them. Some were big enough to cause huge explosions. Others were smaller than that, and we figured out what they are, and sent the team to study them. Then, in the fall of 2000, we sent out samples of the Moon, and they showed us many of these craters.
What we found was a massive crater, with large amounts of debris that turned out to be from the impact of a comet. A lot of it was in the form of rock that was on the Moon. And these are very, very small craters. They looked like the ones we saw in the movie: massive, massive rocks, which look like a big chunk of earth. We also found that some of these craters were even larger than the one in the movie, and they were even smaller than the ones we saw in the movie.
We did find the same thing in other sites.
In 2003, we discovered that an ancient volcano was erupting with huge chunks of rock on several occasions. That was one of the main reasons we decided to go to the Moon. The volcano, named "Shakira," is a big crater. It has a size of about 2.7 kilometers (1.3 miles) wide and about 10 meters deep. As you can see from the graph above, the massive eruptions were made around the time that the Moon was formed. And the large pieces and chunks of rock are very well preserved, as is the way the earth gets heated and cooled, which we'll get to in a second.
It gets even more interesting when you look at the crater data for some of the smaller craters, which are also known as "Ceres Craters". For the Ceres Crater, this large rock was about 12 times the size of the larger C. It had a crater width of about 1.4 kilometers (1.6 miles) and a diameter of a kilometer. The crater itself was about 3.5 kilometers (3.7 miles) across. It had a diameter of over 2 kilometers (1.6 miles).
So, there's another huge crater on the Moon, that actually looks like a great one. Its diameter is about a mile
