But what does all this have to do with the original NES controller?
In a recent interview with IGN, the game designer for the original NES said the Joy-Con controllers were designed with an original purpose in mind: "To play the original Nintendo game. This is my dream."
For more information on the NES controller, check out the Nintendo Switch Game Guide.
So what is the problem? As a console enthusiast (yes, I'm one of them), I have to admit that I'm a bit of an oddball. I've played several games of the original NES controller (like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong) – just a few times, though – and I've been lucky to play them all with the original console.
But I am more than a little skeptical about the new controller.
Before we dive into the technical aspects of the controllers, let's take a look at what Nintendo's own website states about the Joy-Con controller:
This controller allows you to play all of the original NES games and the entire Super Smash Bros. series at once. By holding the controls down while using the Nintendo Switch, you can also move your controller to place any number of Super Smash Bros. characters into your inventory. This enables you to place up to four Super Smash Bros. characters at once. It is possible to make your own custom Joy-Con controllers, and use them to play the original games as well. The Joy-Con controller has a built-in wireless power supply that works in conjunction with a built-in microphone for easy communication via voice or video.
But what about the original controllers?
Nintendo hasn't released a full-size version of the original NES controllers, but it has confirmed that these models come with a special controller:
The Joy-Con controller comes with a built-in Wii Remote (though it's more of a standard Wii remote), which allows you to use it to connect to any connected Wii U game console. However, it's also compatible with all the Nintendo games bundled with the Nintendo Switch on the Nintendo website, including the aforementioned classic games.
One final note: There's not much else you can do with the original Nintendo controllers, other than plug them in in. The Joy-Con controller features a very specific sound system (called a "focal sound") that makes it sound like it came from an older Famicom controller — which means you're doing an entirely different thing with it than you are with the original NES controller.
