Facebook says it was a "non-profit organization that created, produced and propagated the content of stories we shared."

An investigation by the BBC found that the company was using political and religious sites such as Facebook to sell information.

Facebook said it removed the stories in an effort to comply with EU laws that prevent it being treated as "advertising."

But in 2012 it was fined more than €1.5 million (£8.5 million) by the European Commission for failing to comply with EU standards. The Department of Education is investigating how state officials mishandled a report that found "no evidence" of discrimination in student loan borrowers.

The report, which was sent to the Department of Education in 2012, was made public in August after it was revealed by Rep. Michael McCaul (R-N.C.), head of the Education Committee, that a number of students who had benefited from higher education were not given the same opportunities as those in the general student loan market.

The report has since been made public.

"It's been very frustrating to see that the Department of Education failed to take immediate action and to acknowledge that this can happen to students in the future," said Matt Bostick, a spokesman for the Education Department.

The report was made public after McCaul, who represents a state that has the nation's highest high school graduation rate, signed the resolution, which he said is now headed to the Education Department's Office of Consumer Affairs.

"We cannot and will not tolerate this type of behavior in our state school system," McCaul said in a statement. "We need the Department of Education to do more to help students get the education they need and to stop this type of behavior in their lives."

Bostick said the Department of Education has been reviewing the report and will review it with the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights on Wednesday.

"It's still a little concerning that the Education Department failed to take any immediate action to address this issue, but as this report shows, it is absolutely critical for our students to have the same opportunities as their peers," he said.

Bostick said the Education Department is working with the Department of Education to provide financial aid for the students who received the study loan from the university. He said the Education Department also has a grant program for borrowers who are "not in a position to make loans from private students."
