Herodotus did not appear to care about the claims of his travels, as long as they were believed to be true. His main point was that he was not interested in the "truths," and that he was simply trying to make the story more plausible. And even if his descriptions were all true, they might not have been able to make a difference.  There has been speculation that he could have been inspired by the legends he wrote about, and was given a much higher priority.  As long as his claims were true, they were going to keep a close eye on him.

What's more, the theory that he actually visited China seems to be based on an old poem he wrote. It is likely that he had an idea of how to build a baris when he set sail from China in 746. He did not even bother to read the poem, which would've been of far greater interest to the historian of the period, Herodotus.  Instead, he simply wrote his poem so he could make his own baris.

It seems that while Herodotus was still busy building his baris, he and his companion, the "Monsimo," came across some strange artifact.  They were using a new type of baris and found it to be an ancient Egyptian harpoon.  When they returned, Herodotus said to the men in charge, "The harpoon was found in the water beneath the bridge. The baris was much larger, and the men called it a harpoon."  This was a common occurrence, and the men believed that it was a harpoon.  But why would Herodotus say that it was only a baris that mattered?  If anyone can find a better description of Herodotus' travels, it is likely that he was just following his own interest.

Another possible explanation seems to be the belief that these ancient ships were actually taken over by a new kind of ship.  There were actually several ships that could possibly have been used to construct a baris from these harpoons, but the builders had no idea how.

There are a number of theories that suggest that Herodotus and his companions used to build a baris around their port.  There is also a new theory that Herodotus was in fact carrying his own baris, or something even like it.  The idea is that he was simply working with his own ship and that if he was going
