"In addition, our focus is to become one of the world's most cost-effective space companies, with a workforce of up to 2 million dedicated to providing and supporting these services and services to our customers, partners, governments, and organizations in a manner that is not inconsistent with the goals of a company, as described by our long-term plan to create more space and global jobs."
A number of companies have also announced layoffs, including SpaceX. In July, SpaceX announced that it had cut its workforce by nearly 70 percent, and that it had cut about 1,000 staffers.
The company's website lists nearly 800 locations in the United States and Canada, including eight in North America. As of Friday evening, the company had about 5,000 employees in the United States and roughly 15,000 in Canada.
In an interview with SpaceX.com, Shotwell said the company was "really looking to get to where we're at" with its new workforce, "in a way, the big change is that we're going to make it so we have more people, more managers, more engineers, more designers, more people."
When asked if the company is committed to delivering for its customers, Shotwell cited the fact that the company's future will depend on how it develops its future customers, noting that the team will be "going through a lot of different milestones."
"I think it's going to be a great team," Shotwell said. "We're going to get to where we need to be for the next decade."
