In fact, one of the reasons Waymo is in such a hurry is the way it's getting back into the driver's seat of its current technology. While the company is now trying to convince the public that Waymo's current technology is a better fit for driving, the company also said it's still working on some of the same issues that have plagued Waymo's current technology.
The company was initially developing a self-driving car by Waymo in 2012. The first version of the car needed to be designed to be more tractable and less prone to oversteer. A second version had to be built so that the car would be able to drive itself. Now for the self-driving car, Waymo is looking for a way to make the car self-driving.
At present, the company is looking to build the self-driving car by way of a "Caterpillar" that it would build from scratch rather than its current assembly line. The Caterpillar was one of the first vehicles to work with Waymo's self-driving car.
But Waymo has been working on a different version of the Caterpillar that's built in China.
The Caterpillar is a hybrid car that's more capable when it's in a straight line. The company's CTO is not convinced that these versions of the vehicle are the best fit for self-driving.
"The Caterpillar isn't a car that's going to be able to do its job. It could be a car that's going to drive itself because I don't think it's going to be able to drive itself because of all the road stuff. The Caterpillar wouldn't be able to do the job," CTO John Stoltz wrote at the time.
