In the report, MIT researchers note that "the most important challenge for the future of nuclear energy would be to meet rising global demand in two key ways: from more renewable sources like nuclear power; and from cleaner energy sources like nuclear power, which would be cheaper and more efficient."
"It is hard to overestimate the importance of nuclear power," MIT senior scientist and nuclear technologist Bruce W. Koehler said in a press release. "If we are to reduce emissions from the use of nuclear power, they will require less fuel and more power. Nuclear power is particularly attractive because it provides a reliable, reliable, alternative. In the near future, we will need to take into account the need to have nuclear power on its own and avoid using it to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the near future."
The report goes on to discuss the possible implications for electricity users in the United States, including states that have already decided to shut down or "resent" the power sector. And at least two recent projects that have been touted as "cleaner" models for renewable energy – the wind-fired Generating Station in Colorado, and the proposed Achieving Solar Incentive for Wind Power (AGIP) – could prove to be more or less feasible if fully managed.
"The future of the future of electricity generation is not an easy one," Koehler said in his press release. "With that in mind, a team of MIT researchers has developed a series of four simple projects that might provide a new, sustainable alternative to nuclear power."
The first, for instance, is a project that will be completed in 2018 and could produce power in 2033. It's likely that the project will be completed, and the second, for instance, would be an AEGP, a project which would provide power in the coming decades.
"There are a number of ways that we can use nuclear power that we know will provide a clean, clean energy future," Koehler said. "We are working with the DOE and other federal agencies to address the challenges these technologies will face and how they may be scaled down to meet their need."
A number of other projects have been put on the back burner because of the uncertainty surrounding the possibility of the technology. For instance, a German company called AEGP was recently awarded a $10 million contract to develop a new wind turbine after a number of projects that were slated to receive funding from the DOE were shut down or canceled, while another proposed project, in the United States
