It's not just that people who run the internet are "in" it. As the internet evolves, they're being trained to use the tools required to build and run it.
The reason Twitter is so popular is that it's able to provide a platform for a wide range of political and social information. And with more than a billion monthly active users, it's no surprise that people are increasingly using it to build their own content, both in their own words and in their own minds.
"Social media is really the only way we allow any kind of political debate or debate to be conducted online," said Stamos. "We have to make sure that we're using the best possible tools available and not just using tools that are being hacked, malicious."
Facebook is, of course, a major player in this. The company has developed algorithms to allow users to share their news with third parties, like the Google-owned News Feed Network. But there's a significant gap between what's being shared and what it's actually being used for. "We used our social network for a short time to get a broad and focused public reaction against the 'fake news' platform," Stamos said. "But now we're seeing the potential of other platforms to do the same thing, and we want to try to make that bigger. We're making a huge effort to make that happen, not just in terms of social media, but in terms of our other tools."
Facebook isn't alone in its focus on social media. Google has launched a new service called Reddit, which includes a community where users can share images and comments.
