New Horizons' mission has been a success so far: The spacecraft arrived in Pluto in July 2013. From there, the spacecraft will carry the new camera on its way to Mars for the next 10 years. In 2015, NASA plans to return the rover at a distance of one million miles to explore the Red Planet, and the spacecraft will carry the probe for a three-year mission to return samples of the planet to Earth. In December 2014, New Horizons will fly through the Red Planet.
New Horizons won't be going into the Red Planet or its moons anytime soon. The spacecraft is still going to find planets and moons—and eventually the most intelligent life on Earth. If it takes one more year or two of searching before something like Ultima Thule finds a home, it will be interesting to see what new discoveries we can learn from New Horizons' return.
