One of the reasons we've been working to fix this bug is to protect the privacy of our users in the long-term. We are working with Google and others to find new ways of improving our security in order to improve the quality of our services.

In response to the bug, Bar said Facebook was working with the FBI to investigate the matter. According to Bar, Facebook is also working with the U.S. Department of Justice in an effort to identify people who are "likely to be involved in an attempt to gain access to your photos and provide additional data to the FBI."

While Facebook has not yet commented on the issue, Bar called the disclosure something of an "interference" into Facebook's "privacy policy."

Bar added that the FBI's investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"We are working diligently on ways to get the government to understand and investigate this issue," Bar said in a blog post.
