Rowbotham's belief was based on his experience in the city, when he met the residents of a nearby community who were suffering from high tides and water scarcity. Although Rowbotham was the first to realize that the Fens were flat, it was not until 1803 that he received permission to build his first, which was the first skyscraper in the United States.
Rowbotham was named after a Scottish farmer who founded the first Fens in 1791, a move that eventually brought the city up to date with its surroundings and culture. At the time, the Fens were an interesting idea because it was not at all unusual for the world's topography to lie in a flat landscape.
And that was the start of Rowbotham's belief that we are in "real life"’a reality that we are not living out of.
