The announcement of Tesla's public status came during a meeting
The announcement of Tesla's public status came during a meeting with shareholders on Sunday, when Musk said that he would change course on the company.
"I think it's fair to say that my position is not as important as I think it should be," he said. "I think that when the public position is at its most important and I think that the whole board and the chairman and chief executive are doing a better job at that than I am, it really was a great surprise to me."
In other words, Musk has not yet given up on publicly owning shares in the company.
"I think that is the best way to move forward from this situation and not simply keep the company as a public company," Musk said. It's hard to imagine what our current climate situation is like without the greenhouse gas emissions of burning fossil fuels.
This year that scenario, which is now the dominant one in the global climate debate, has its greatest impact on the planet.
"The worst case scenario, with an increase in the intensity of the atmospheric carbon dioxide, and a rise in the number of climate-related storms, is being projected, which is likely to be one of the leading causes of climate change in the last 40 years," says Christopher Wiebe, director of climate change and resource policy at the Global Warming Policy Project at the University of Maryland.
Climate modeling has already shown that extreme events are expected to become more common in the coming decades and that more extreme events are expected to become more frequent.
What's clear now is that the climate will continue to warm in the foreseeable future.
The number of climate-related storms that are expected in the next 30 years, and the number of new hurricanes that will develop over the next 20 years, is projected to rise by more than 100 times by 2100.
And that's before we start looking the other way.
"The reason climate change isn't causing the new storms is that what we are seeing now is the first time in history that the level of warming in the atmosphere is the same that it was 50 years ago. That's just the beginning," says Wiebe.
"It's just the beginning of a long period of warming, not just during the last 30 years but also in the last 100 years and so on. We are on track to see a new level of warming in the atmosphere in the next 30 years, so it's going to happen very quickly.
