The announcement comes after a six-week period after FIFA's governing body decided not to award the World Cup to Brazil.

The move to give the 2018 tournament a "legacy" has been one of Blatter's most significant achievements as he has consistently shown he is keen to bring the tournament to a close with a new World Cup in 2018.

Blatter made the announcement at an event in Berlin, where he was also due to play at the U.S. Open on June 18.

"I have decided to complete the World Cup, but it is a great honour for my country," he told reporters.

"It is a wonderful moment for the world, a great moment for the sports of football and for the football community in general."
