The authors of the study concluded that while there is an enormous amount of violence in superhero movies, the good guys are actually more violent than the bad guys. This was confirmed by a study of more than 40,000 scenes in two-hour superhero movies. In addition, in the movie "The Incredible Hulk," the bad guys are all more violent than the good guys.
"The bad guys are more violent than the good guys in all of their bloody battles," said Dr. Olympia. "Even though we know that the bad guys are more dangerous, in the vast majority of movies where the bad guys are fighting each other, the bad guys are far more dangerous than the good guys. They're a lot more violent in every single one."
And with that in mind, this should not be surprising. Not only are the good guys much more violent than the bad guys, but even the bad guys are more violent than the good guys. The good guys are almost three times more likely to attack in a fight than the bad guys. The bad guys are four times as likely to be shot at, and the good guys are six times as likely to be killed. And, of course, the bad guys are more dangerous than the good guys.
As Dr. Olympia pointed out, we know that people with violent tendencies are almost as likely to attack in a fight as they are to be hit, and that even though we tend to think of them as being in the "good guys" category, a majority of the time we're actually in the "bad guys." And it's not just guys who are violent. A recent study by the Pew Research Center found that young black men and white men are four times as likely to be hit as young black women or white men.
This is not some sort of "bully," as it should be.
It certainly isn't a stereotype. The bad guys are much more violent than the good guys. But when you consider that the bad guys aren't just on the inside, but in the middle of battle, they are far more dangerous than it might sound.
And so while these studies provide a good baseline for judging violence in superhero movies, the results are a bit misleading. The bad guys are only so much more dangerous than the good guys, even if one looks at the data objectively. The bad guys are often so much more violent than the good guys that it's hard to know whether they're actually more dangerous than the bad guys.
