"The first iteration of this technology would see our driver

"The first iteration of this technology would see our driver drive in cars that have a self-driving driver in the driver's seat, and the first car with such a system would be able to drive to your phone's location," Musk said, adding that it would not be available until next year. Tesla's own system is currently undergoing trials to "see how it works, see if it works for our customers, and see if we can improve it in other ways."

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Thursday that the company is "very happy" with the "smart summon" feature, "and has some great ideas" for it, but said that it's currently not clear what "next step" could be taken to implement the feature on the Model X, which is expected to hit dealerships in 2018. "I think we are very happy with the smart summon." That might be a new direction for Tesla, Musk said, "but I think the next step is to see how much the technology can do for people."

But the big question at this point is whether the feature would make it into the Model X. Musk doesn't want to say that Tesla has yet decided if it will include this feature, although he did say that the company is focused on getting it out to customers. "I think we will see the market develop in some way," he said.

"I am still very excited about the technology being available in the Model X," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a statement to TechCrunch . "I am sure we will see other markets in the future be able to do this. We are very happy with the technology being available in the Model X and we will continue to continue to build upon it."
