The measure passes, and the government says it is now in its final stages and will be implemented in the coming months. However, it's uncertain what level of transparency would be required for companies who can't comply, or simply who can't afford to.

The new law would help companies to secure their data and, in the process, could help make it easier for law enforcement to target individuals when it comes to encryption.

"As we see with so many other laws, this would help to improve security and make it easier for people to make choices," said Australian cybersecurity expert Chris Laxman.

The new law will also make it easier for the US government to gain access to encrypted communications and data when they're not in the public domain, Laxman said.

"The problem is that this law's not just a means to a goal," he said. "It's an end-game."

The US government has the most powerful warrant system in the world. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has called the warrant regime "an Orwellian nightmare."

The new law comes in response to the government's new push to crack down on the Internet by cracking down on the American government's ability to tap into the phone and Internet connections of Americans.
