"The only thing they can do is let us know whether they're actually malicious or not," said John P. McDonough, Google's senior vice president of corporate intelligence, in a phone interview. "If they're, they'll be in a state where if you install it, it can cause havoc."

Google says this is the first time it's detected an Android-based trojan as active.

"It's hard to say if it's a very sophisticated, very sophisticated Trojan [that is] capable of causing very serious damage," said McDonough.

He said the company is also working on testing an updated version of the Trojan's ability to detect mobile banking apps as they're being used on an infected device, and also seeing if it can help Google prevent a Trojan attack by monitoring its own apps."I think that the best way to do this is to use what I call an 'A-Frame' of the game, or an 'A-Frame' of the game that is very similar to what we are doing on TV."
