The research group believes that Tetris can be effective for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It is also important for treating people who suffer from cognitive decline, which can lead to poor mental health and mental retardation, according to study researcher David H. Ayer, PhD, who directs the Neuroscience Research Division at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
"You can have many different kinds of post-traumatic stress disorder and the same thing can happen to you and affect your career. This study shows that it can be a useful therapeutic option for people with post-traumatic stress disorder," Ayer told me. "For example, in recent years, you can have people who are struggling with anxiety and depression and they get treated for the post-traumatic stress disorder, the same way with epilepsy."
The study was funded by the National Institute for Mental Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
What would your experiences be like if you could play Tetris at a young age? Would you be able to get out of it without having any problem?
"I'm not sure," I would say to myself. I'd be able to do that because I'm a relatively young person, and I think the cognitive functions and the emotional and physical side of it would probably be quite different. But I don't think that's the case for people who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. I know that I can still play, but I don't think that there is a lot of time, unless somebody's telling you and you're looking for ways to do it. But I want to be able to do that, because I am such a creative mind. I think it would be a real good thing to have that ability. I would get out of it.
"The question I have to ask is, do I want to be able to do it or do I want to have my brain shut down in any way I feel like it is?"
