"This can happen on any computer or computer network and with any kind of device," said Alex D'Onofrio, a security consultant at security firm Trend Micro. "With Medtronic's security, they are using a standard, but not the standard, radio communication protocol that they rely on." D'Onofrio says the Conexus system is a critical component because it can only communicate with one device when it has been implanted in the patient's body. "And when you do the same thing over and over, the radios work the same," he said. There are several other flaws in the scheme, but D'Onofrio says the Conexus system is the least exploitable of the three.

"The one thing that's more obvious is that this is a critical vulnerability in the Medtronic [Conexus] program, so any new vulnerability that could be exploited into a commercial system that's not that vulnerable could be exploited into other systems that use the same security," he said.

The company says the flaw is fixed in a patch released Thursday. The issue affects the Conexus network, and it's not yet clear how the code can be affected. "We have not seen any evidence that it's a real security vulnerability, but if the code is being used to do this, then we believe this is potentially a real vulnerability," D'Onofrio said. ®This is a story about a friend who was murdered in an incident not only of his own, but of the other family members too. The person who had the most tragic death, and the person who would have had the most to hide, has never been interviewed by me, and I have never seen an interview for that. I do, however, know that I have worked with an investigator who can do that and has spent the last six years interviewing some of the families who have given their lives to help me. When I go on the record to share the story, I am especially very grateful to the family of the deceased.

But I don't know what the "Maggie" story was about. Not one of those families has mentioned me. I've never tried to write a piece that doesn't include them. But that's what I'm here to tell you.
