"This new attack is more a signal that the attacks will be more successful by being more sophisticated and more sophisticated," said Andrew Zablocki, lead researcher at security firm Petya. The Mirai attack is the latest of two security flaws that are in the same category, according to McAfee. The other was issued in February from a user, the researcher added.
Viruses that allow for malicious or unpatched software to be installed are known for their potential to cause damage to routers or other devices. But some attacks are particularly effective in their first-time victim who has a compromised network. A recent report by the U.K.-based Computerworld found that Mirai infected around 5,000 mobile phones, tablets, and other devices with malicious software, with up to 90% of these being infected with Mirai. That's a significant increase from the total number of devices infected in 2013, which saw more than 13 million infected.
"The spread of Mirai malware is more of an anomaly than a threat," said Zablocki in an email to Ars. "It's still quite early to say whether it will be effective, but we have a few hypotheses that suggest the virus can be targeted. Most likely, it will be more of a niche attack than a real threat. Mirai is a sophisticated but very small, high-level, sophisticated and highly targeted computer-based attack vector. It has broad applications against network networks and other data center systems."Billionaire businessman and investor Sheldon Adelson of Las Vegas is holding a conference call in Washington, D.C., on Friday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
The event is part of the $10.5 million Adelson donation he made to the Republican National Committee in November 2000, which was designed to keep him from becoming an opponent of the Republican Party. The donations came after he said he was considering running for president.
Adelson will go up against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in Tuesday's election in Alabama, an important swing state. The billionaire will be the first person to call on Trump to remove former President Jimmy Carter from office.
"It's important for me and this country," Adelson said. "In a time when the American people are in a crisis, Trump is an unifier. I'm not going to be out there saying, 'Yeah, he got into this because he wanted to be good president.' I'm going to be out there saying, '
