Udelv is one of the first self-driving, self-driven cars, and it has been working with Amazon to develop its self-driving vehicle prototype. There are more than 50 Uber drivers and drivers in the Phoenix area.
Laury told a reporter last year, "One of the things we've developed as a company that you can't develop in a lab is self-driving technology, because when you develop a technology you have to take it to a high level of safety before you are able to apply a technology for commercial use, and then you have to do a lot of research and development before you can do that. ... You have to bring your expertise to bear, and so it's very hard to develop a technology to make a big profit."
We asked Laury whether he expects autonomous vehicles to become a big driver of the transportation industry. "I'm hopeful. We're pretty optimistic," he said. "I'm a very optimistic company, and the technology we're working with is quite capable, but in the world of driving, you have to have a certain amount of trust, and so we're pretty focused on trying to do that."
We reached out to Udelv CEO Daniel Laury, who declined to comment.
We asked Udelv to offer up more information on the pilot program. Laury's response:
Udelv's initial goal is to launch in September and then expand to a more diverse region in the future. We don't expect to develop self-driving vehicles for the U.S. market until 2019.
We're also not sure if Udelv will launch its own self-driving test project, or if the company will invest in a third-party technology to help the company develop a fully self-driving car.
We've talked to an unnamed Udelv representative. The company hasn't been mentioned in any of the stories. The FBI says it has been investigating one of its agents as a possible terrorist.
FBI spokesman David Bales said on Wednesday that the bureau has been investigating the man as a possible suspect in a shooting at the Capitol Hill Federal Building on Thursday that left one person dead and six others injured, and that it's not known whether he will face charges.
"We are not commenting on specific cases and we're not commenting on any specific cases at this time," Bales said in a statement. "We fully appreciate the great support of the American people and look forward to a thorough investigation."
