WELCOME

"We're grateful to all of you who have joined us in welcoming us to Canada. We were hoping the issue of the embassy would be resolved within the next few weeks," she told the Canadian Press.

Vidal told the Canadian Press that the Canadian government was "extremely concerned" about the deaths of her colleague.

"It can't be resolved for too many reasons," she said, adding that "our people and our interests are at stake" in the case.

Vidal was one of eight staff wounded in a deadly attack on the French embassy in Cuba in March 2016, which triggered the most recent round of violence to break out in the country.

Vidal also spoke out for the second time this week in an effort to raise awareness about the deteriorating relations between the United States and Cuba.

"We know that what was going on here will persist until the end of this week," she said in her official capacity.

The Canadian embassy confirmed the deaths of a Canadian diplomat at the Canadian Consulate in Havana on Wednesday.

The Canadian Embassy said in a statement Tuesday that a Canadian diplomat has been killed in the attack in Montreal on Christmas Day and that the embassy was working to "secure the safety of the Canadian government."

The embassy also said that it provided "an exceptional service" to the community, noting that "the death of a Canadian diplomat has no impact on our mission or our mission-making".

Canada and Cuba are known for political and economic support for one another and for their shared interests in international affairs. In June 2016, the two countries signed a peaceful settlement of the Cuban civil war and agreed to open an embassy in Havana. The government of Cuba has maintained its traditional diplomatic relationship with Canada and has also helped to develop bilateral relations with other countries.

The two countries have signed seven agreements with a total of 5,000 other countries and regions—including more than half of the 28-nation Group of Seven states—making them the most open and inclusive countries on earth for trade.A video posted by Richard Bowers (@brandsbowers) on Dec 4, 2015 at 7:16am PST
